There is nothing wrong with this in and of itself I feel I aspire to fill a similar role in my relationship with Mr. I also wonder whether the authors and editors of these YA books feel at all beholden to a different set of ethics when contemplating the fact that their wildly popular books will have a huge impression on a very impressionable demographic…?
I already keep flour and sugar in t hese OXO pop canisters , which look pretty and stack nicely, but am frankly underwhelmed by them. How ridiculous…and adorable. Love those statement sleeves. Would be so flattering on someone with long, athletic legs! Literary life raft. I enjoyed stirring the pot with this post …read the comments for some epic food for thought! I love playing catch up through your post script links. As I clearly just did from the last post I commented on!
This post means the world to me. For the last few years, despite my B. As always, thank you so much for the beautiful words.
All of us in public school Mount Vernon High School here! Hi Veronica! I have enjoyed getting to know you so inquisitive! Glad this resonated with you. I do think that something happens in your late 20s and early 30s that makes you just feel solid. Some of us have babies? You are a person here! You are smart! Do not be intimidated! Ooh, The Selection series…so much to unpack there.
I read the entire series while bedridden with a horrid flu, and I have to say while my appreciation for America as a protagonist never really reached the full-fledged stage, the novels themselves do get much more interesting as you go on. Stick with it! Happy reading, and enjoy your lowbrow pleasures — I think it just makes the view from on high that much more enjoyable in the end!
Many thoughts here! Those plays were entertainment for the masses! They really only seem removed and fussy to us now because the language has changed so much. And people are quick to dismiss modern interpretations, but making those stories more accessible is a good thing! So delightful and funny and enjoyable. One of the things that I loved about The Mindy Project was that Mindy Lahiri was a smart, hardworking girl with a serious job badass ObGyn who was not at all ashamed to love pop music, romantic comedies, clothing, makeup, etc.
They get to have football AND fantasy football for entertainment. A whole hobby based on sitting around playing make believe! My eyes literally popped out of my head when you mentioned a podcast clapping emoji hands with Roxane Gay clapping emoji hands about Real Housewives clapping emoji hands. I am literally salivating with excitement for my next walk with my dog! How bout that article? Further, half the things people are replying about -- sci-fi my own research , reality TV and gaming -- are things people do actual real research on already.
Within 48 hours, my response had nearly as many likes and retweets are the original question -- though with far fewer replies. Many folks said they wanted to read this proposed essay of mine, so here it is.
My comments here draw on a large body of existing scholarship in this area; as many folks in the Twitter responses noted, cultural studies and popular culture studies scholars have long resisted the assumptions I aim to expose and explore in this piece. Phrenology was used against women, people of color and certain white ethnic groups to demonstrate their supposed mental inferiority to white men.
As I suggested in my tweets, much of what is considered low culture is associated with poor and working-class people, women, and racialized groups. But instead, the framing seemed to reinforce this elitist boundary. One person asked if playing in a band, going to football games and watching geeky television counted. Grove said it did not.
Another person asked if tarot-card reading and astrology counted. Yes, Grove said. This dismissive and random categorizing is something that would infuriate my many queer witch friends and healers of color who have worked to resist the devaluing of these very subjects and have used astrology and tarot-card reading as antiracist, queer-friendly, feminist practices.
Never mind that scholars have written about every single thing that people were claiming as their lowbrow, dubious guilty pleasures. Further, these supposedly less cultured, less quality objects have massive cultural impact. I crave scholarship that helps me understand my world and how to navigate it. I adore research that seeks to improve human life and reduce our negative impact on each other and the planet.
Devaluing mainstream cultural objects devalues the world we actually live in and differentiates academics as being special humans and not just another group of people with a specific skill set and occupation. We are finding that more and more women are looking for a flatter, straighter, more masculine look. I think it has to do with the increasing equality of the sexes.

The style, which was thought to make women look younger, peaked in the mids. In a look exhibited by actress Demi Moore, the highest points have also moved outwards, away from the nose.
Changing fashion: Towie star Lydia Bright left and model Abbey Clancy right have both opted for lower, and darker brows, contrasting with their light locks. Light and dark: Kelly Osbourne left went against the grain when she kept her bleach blonde brows after a fashion shoot. Coleen Rooney right has pioneered the so called 'Scouse brow' - a thicker darker, but perfectly groomed style.
The researchers said the modern look of lower, straighter brows was particularly beneficial for those with long faces as it avoids adding to the impression of length. The study, reported in the journal Clinical Plastic Surgery, was conducted to help surgeons carry out forehead lifts.
This could be because most are right-handed. Mark Soldin, a spokesman for the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons and a consultant plastic surgeon at St George's and Kingston hospitals, told the Independent: 'Upward curvature of the eyebrows was considered to be an attractive feminine feature in the past.
