Now you are in a foreign country with a pocket full of pounds and there are no exchange houses at sight. What can you do? Barcelona is one of the best-known touristic cities in the world, so there are infrastructures prepared to receive tourists at any time. You won't be able to pay with dollars anywhere. You will absolutely need the currency of the country.
In the UK we have a number of credits cards that let you withdraw cash free of charge from ATM's, which is the cheapest way of getting money. You can order Euro's from brokers which may also be cheaper than bank rates.. You really need to ensure you have Euros for Spain. It is highly unlikely that anywhere other than perhaps a hotel would accept dollars and then they would change it into Euros and charge you extra for the service.!
Please also note that American Express or Diners cards do NOT do so nicely in Spain or Europe and for credit cards the best to have is Mastercard or Visa as they are accepted almost everywhere. However, do also note that if you use an American or UK credit card that while it is more convenient you could find your bank charging you an additional fee for using it for non Dollar or Pound transactions. I would recommend you speak to your bank and see what offers they have for credit cards to be used in Europe Of course not..
The euro is the currency used by a population in the eurozone far greater than the population of the US so the question seems rather strange to European ears.
The question whether you can use euros in, for example, the Czech Republic and Croatia where it is not the currency yet is one thing and in some places there you could pay in euros but dollars are not accepted even "narrowly" in Europe.
The only time I have seen a sign saying dollars were accepted was atn a market by the harbour in Helsinki and obviously aimed at cruise ships and that was at a time when practically every country on the Baltic had its own currency so changing for each port didn't necessarily make sense now more of those countries are in the eurozone. If after Barcelona you are going elsewhere on the northern shores of the Mediterranean the euro is the currency in the majority of countries not Croatia, montenegro, Albania or Turkey, but I don't doubt accepted in some places there too.
Actually I don't live in the States, I live in Latin America where the US dollar is accepted as well as the official currency, hence the question, Thanks for the info, this is my first trip to Europe. Don't worry faze , Europeans are much friendlier in real life! The Spanish especially so. I'm currently in Peru and I see what you mean. Today I took a walking tour and paid the guide in USD.
Even some taxi companies quote and accept USD. You'll be fine in Europe if you bring your ATM card and a few credit cards. If convenient, exchange some Euros before you leave or use the ATM at the airport to pay for incidentals eg Aerobus or taxi. The cambio pays expensive airport rent and wants to make a decent profit from a captive audience, so avoid the cambio, if you want to save money.
Next, forget about exchanging money at your hotel or a retail shop. You're going to pay a high price for those exchanges. If you do need to exchange currency, find a commercial bank that has an international presence. Those banks get a better real time rate than smaller banks and may charge you a smaller exchange fee. Credit card companies add several fees and surcharges to transactions in Barcelona, so in order to eliminate those fees use your ATM card.
If you pay for purchases with your ATM card you avoid the extra surcharges that are part of regular credit card transactions. Cash points or cash machines in Barcelona will not accept ATM cards with five and six digit pin numbers, so make sure you have a four digit pin.
Banks do charge a fee for using the machine, especially if it's an international transaction and your bank may charge you a fee for a withdrawal as well, so it can get expensive if you do it more than a few times. The trick is to take larger sums to reduce the percentage cost of your withdrawal.
If you have more than that amount, you must declare it. Carry cash in a money belt, leg pouch or hidden pocket that's secure and out of sight and use hotel safes and other security measures when you arrive.
Common sense is always your best security when you remember to use it.
