What is the difference between diving ducks and puddle ducks

Their calls are generally coarse and gravelly, compared to the whistles and croaks of many diver species.

Their legs are positioned in the center on their body, enabling them to walk and feed competently on land, though not as well as geese.

When feeding on submerged vegetation, puddle ducks dip their head beneath the surface in a motion known as dabbling. Puddle ducks have a primarily vegetarian diet.

Their flesh is milder and better tasting than diver ducks, which feed heavily on fish, shellfish, aquatic insects, and other animal matter. There are exceptions. The shoveler is a puddle duck that feeds heavily on animal matter, and it is one of the poorest tasting puddle duck species. Such is the case with mallards in many areas of Southeast Alaska, where they taste as bad as most diver ducks.

Below we will cover mallards, wood ducks, and teal. Built on a J-Frame platform this single reed duck call is built for callers of all skill level and abilities.

After hearing for years that duck hunters are looking for a double reed duck call that has the body and ability to reach the sounds only a single reed can we set out to change that and we are proud to offer this "new style" double reed.

The bufflehead picture is of two birds. See the swirl? One just dove under. The Shovelers are dabbling. The geese, swans and mallards are feeding on land. Leg Placement affects how the duck can walk on land and swim.

Divers: Legs are further back making it harder to walk on land but better for swimming. Loon Puddle ducks: Legs are central, can walk on land easily. Penguin not a waterfowl Diving ducks sit lower in the water than the Puddle duck. Puddle Diver Loon, Grebe Divers run on the water to take off where as puddle ducks can take off straight up. So divers are found in more open water and puddle ducks can be found in weedy marshes and on land. Went on my first diver hunt last year. Want to talk about an addictive hunt. I still love hunting the puddlers but I will never turn down a diver hunt The way they sound like a jet when they drop in and the challenge of hitting the buggers is great fun IMO. May 12, 5.
